When you need House manual
A house manual is the right answer when you would rather maintain one document than eight cards scattered around the property. It suits hosts who print once at the start of a season, and properties where guests stay long enough to actually sit down and read something.
It is the wrong answer if your problem is guests asking about one specific thing. A manual is read at the start of a stay, if at all, whereas a card by the bins is read at the moment someone is holding a bottle. If most of your messages are about a single topic, a targeted card beats a comprehensive binder.
Where it goes
On the kitchen table or counter on arrival day, not filed in a drawer. If you print it, spiral-bind it or use a folder that stays open, since a stapled stack gets shuffled and loses pages. Keep the emergency information on its own separate card as well, because that one needs to be findable without opening anything.
Common mistakes
Making it a book
Past about four pages, a manual stops being read and becomes decor. Cut anything a guest could reasonably work out themselves.
Burying the two things everyone needs
Wi-Fi and checkout time account for most lookups. If they are on page three, put them on page one.
Using it instead of point-of-use cards
A manual and a card by the bins do different jobs. The manual is read once; the card is read at the moment of the decision.
Never revising it
A manual accumulates errors faster than single cards because it covers more surface. Read it end to end once a season with fresh eyes.
